Your 200-hour save file almost vanished. Here's the backup system we built after your post.

You told us losing progress is the real game over. One night, a player shared a screenshot of a 200-hour save that almost vanished. They'd been in Classic since 2020, building stats, unlocking skins, finishing missions. A hiccup on our end nearly wiped it all. They recovered it with a local backup they'd made on their own, but the scare stuck. That post got hundreds of upvotes and replies full of similar stories. We knew we had to act.

We're a small student team, so no dedicated infra crew. But we listen. That post became the top idea on our board, which means it became the roadmap. We dropped a few side projects and focused on one thing: making sure that never happens again. We wanted a safety net that runs in the background, no extra steps from you. No manual exports or copying folders.

So we dug into server logs and save structure. Turns out most of you never touched the backup options we'd built. Didn't know they existed or didn't trust them, they were clunky. Our old system forced you to download a file manually. Felt like homework. We needed invisible. Automatic backups on a schedule, zero input. It also had to survive a total server failure, not just a blip.

We tested prototypes on ourselves first, corrupting files on purpose to see if backups kicked in. First version failed, only one copy, and our simulated crash corrupted it. So we added redundant backups across different servers. Plus a check that verifies each backup before it overwrites the last. A few late nights, but we got it working.

Now, every time you finish a match in The Agency, your save copies to three separate places. We also back up at session start in case of a mid-game crash. If our main server dies, your progress is safe elsewhere. You don't lift a finger. It happens while you play.

This is why we love this community. You see a problem, you tell us, we fix it. You didn't just log a bug; you showed us a panic every player dreads. We turned that into protection for every save, not just yours. That 200-hour file is safe now. So is yours.

How it works, minus the jargon

We wanted this so simple you wouldn't notice. When you finish a match or load one, our server quietly snapshots your save. It stores that snapshot in three locations. One server fails, we pull from another. Each snapshot gets a timestamp so we can roll back if needed. Say a patch corrupts your save. You can restore to a pre-patch backup.

The verification step is our proudest part. Before a new backup overwrites an old one, the system checks the file's checksum, fancy talk for making sure data is complete and unbroken. Anything off, it keeps the old backup and flags it for us. A corrupted save can't silently replace your good one. We learned that the hard way with our first prototype, so we built the fix in.

๐•PMIMG2๐•

There's also a manual restore option, but it's optional. Some of you like control, so we added a settings button to browse backup history and restore any version. Most of you won't need it. Fully automatic, runs on our side, no hit to performance. No pop-ups, no progress bars. It just works.

We're still small, so we can't promise 100% uptime. But now, even if our servers catch fire, you keep your progress. Worst case, you lose a few minutes from your last match, not 200 hours. That margin is a relief for us. Hope it is for you.

๐•PMIMG3๐•

We made sure backups work across all modes, including Classic. That 2020 version has a special place for us, and we know many of you have played it for years. So Classic's save handling now uses the same system. Old saves are protected like your current ones. Even if you haven't touched Classic lately, your progress is safe.

What this means next session

Next time you load The Agency, no backup worries. That's the point. Push through a 3-hour RUSH run or grind that last mission without a care. Internet blips or server hiccups? Your progress is already saved. We tested a simulated crash during a live match. When we logged back in, we'd lost only the last two minutes. Huge win.

For beginners, this matters. If you're just getting into indie game dev, you might not know how fragile save files are. It's easy to lose hours without a proper backup. We all learn that the hard way. So we're sharing our process openly. This isn't marketing; it's a real solution other devs can learn from. We used simple server-side scripts and regular file saves. Nothing fancy.

๐•PMIMG4๐•

Wondering if this affects performance? It doesn't. Backups run on a separate server process. All you notice is your save feels safer. You might even forget we have it, which is perfect. Like a seatbelt, you think about it only when you need it, but it's always there.

If you hit any save issues or want to test restore, hop onto our dev forum and tell us. We check it daily and we're happy to walk you through. We also post dev updates there. The idea board is open, if you want more backup slots or a cloud export, vote it up and we'll add it.

This update is live now. No waiting. We pushed it during a weekly maintenance window, no downtime. You'll see a new 'Backup Status' option in settings if you want to peek. But if you never open that menu, fine. Your save is safe either way.

Thanks to the player who posted that warning. You probably saved hundreds from the heartbreak you almost had. Grateful you shared your panic. Glad we could turn your close call into a safety net for everyone.
